The Ride E-Z ST100 is the first Ride E-Z eBike model, and one of its most useful everyday features is its removable battery.
Instead of having a battery that stays fixed inside the frame, the ST100 uses a removable, lockable lithium-ion battery. That means the rider can take the battery out of the bike for charging, storage, or transport.
For many riders, this makes eBike ownership easier. The entire bike does not have to be parked next to a wall outlet. The battery can be removed, carried inside, and charged in a dry, well-ventilated area. This is especially helpful when the bike is stored in a garage, shed, apartment, trailer, storage room, or anywhere that does not have easy access to power.
A removable battery also makes it easier to care for the battery during extreme weather, travel, or longer periods when the bike is not being used.
Removable Battery vs. Built-In Battery
Most eBikes use one of two common battery designs: a removable battery or a battery built into the frame.
A built-in battery can give an eBike a clean, streamlined appearance. Since the battery is more hidden, the bike may look more like a traditional bicycle. For some riders, that style is appealing.
The practical tradeoff is charging and storage. If the battery is not easy to remove, the entire eBike usually needs to be moved close to an outlet. That can be inconvenient if the bike is stored away from power or if the rider wants to charge the battery indoors.
A removable battery gives the rider more flexibility. The battery can be brought inside to charge, removed before transporting the bike, and stored separately during extreme heat, cold, rain, or long-term storage.
For riders who want simple day-to-day use, a removable battery can be the more convenient option.
Why a Removable Battery Can Be Useful
A removable battery is not just about charging. It can help in several practical situations.
If the bike is stored in a garage or shed, the battery can still be charged indoors. If the bike is being transported on a vehicle rack, removing the battery reduces the bike’s weight and helps protect the battery from vibration and weather during travel.
If the weather is very hot, very cold, rainy, snowy, or stormy, the battery can be removed and stored inside. This helps keep the battery away from harsh conditions that can affect performance and long-term battery life.
For longer storage, removing the battery also makes it easier to keep it in a safer indoor location.
How to Remove the Battery on the Ride E-Z ST100
The Ride E-Z ST100 battery is located inside the seat tube and can be accessed by removing the seat post.
For full illustrated instructions, see the Ride E-Z ST100 Owner’s Manual here:
Before removing or reinstalling the battery, make sure the eBike is turned off.
To remove the battery:
- Locate the seat post clamp.
- Open the seat post clamp.
- Remove the seat post completely.
- Remove the black clamp completely.
- Turn the key to the unlock position.
- Pull the battery vertically upward until it separates from the eBike frame.
When reinstalling the battery, align it carefully and make sure it is fully seated and locked securely before riding. A properly installed battery helps maintain electrical contact and prevents the battery from moving while the bike is in use.
Charging the ST100 Battery
After removing the battery, bring it indoors to charge. Choose a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, moisture, open flame, heat sources, fuel, solvents, paper, or other flammable materials.
To charge the ST100 battery:
- Connect the charger plug to the battery charging port first.
- Once the charger is securely connected to the battery, plug the charger into the wall outlet.
- Check the charger indicator light.
- A red light means the battery is charging.
- A green light means charging is complete.
Typical charging time is about 4 to 6 hours, depending on how much charge remains in the battery and the surrounding conditions.
Use the original charger provided with the Ride E-Z ST100. An unapproved charger can damage the battery, create a safety risk, and may void warranty coverage.
Do not leave the battery charging overnight or unattended. It is best to monitor charging and unplug the charger once the battery is fully charged.
When to Charge the Battery
Check the battery level before each ride. If the charge is low, charge the battery before heading out so there is enough range for the trip.
The battery does not need to be fully drained before charging. Partial charges are normal for lithium-ion batteries and can support long battery life.
For regular use, charge the battery when it is low or when more range is needed for the next ride. Avoid letting the battery sit fully discharged for long periods.
For storage longer than one month, charge the battery to about 50% to 80% before putting it away. While in storage, check the battery every 2 to 3 months and recharge it if needed.
Battery Storage Tips
When the ST100 battery is removed and brought inside, place it somewhere safe, dry, and secure. A room with a smoke detector is a good choice.
Do not puncture, open, modify, or disassemble the battery. If the battery is dropped, punctured, visibly damaged, swollen, or exposed to excessive water, stop using it and contact Ride E-Z Customer Support or an authorized Ride E-Z dealer.
During extreme weather, including heat waves, snow, heavy rain, or freezing temperatures, remove the battery from the eBike and store it indoors.
Final Thoughts
Built-in frame batteries can look clean and streamlined, but removable batteries offer practical advantages for everyday riders.
With the Ride E-Z ST100, the removable battery makes it easier to charge indoors, store the battery safely, transport the bike, and protect the battery during harsh weather or long-term storage.
For riders who want a simple, flexible charging setup, a removable battery can make eBike ownership much more convenient.
